When routine blood tests showed that Eve had high blood sugar levels, her GP referred her to the Healthier You NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme.
Eve was disappointed and anxious about what the results meant and, knowing she didn’t want to develop type 2 diabetes, she was unsure what to do next.
Eve joined her Healthier You group at Holy Trinity Church in Wandsworth in November 2025.
“I was disappointed and anxious about what that [high blood sugar] meant and how I could do something about it. I really, really didn’t and don’t want to develop type 2 diabetes and so felt lost on what to do next.”
Having monthly sessions in the diary for the year ahead gave Eve something positive to focus on.
“The monthly sessions in the diary for the following year were such a boost to know that I would have check-in points, accountability and the support of the group.”
Throughout the programme, Eve was supported by Julia, who she describes as welcoming, reassuring and knowledgeable.
“Julia was very open, welcoming, reassuring, knowledgeable and generous with her time and knowledge.”
Eve also valued the support and consistency of the group around her.
“The group were also really open and friendly and consistent in turning up each time, sharing, chatting, laughing, learning.”
Eve’s main goal when she started the programme was clear: not to develop type 2 diabetes.
Along the way, she faced challenges around changing her diet, moving more, comfort eating and anxiety.
She continued working on these areas throughout the programme, with a focus on what she calls her “1% journey.”
Since joining Healthier You, Eve has reached several milestones that she is proud of.
She has got below 100kg, reduced her blood sugar levels by five points as of July 2026, and made changes to her diet that she has continued with almost a year later.
Her goals now are to keep going with her “1% journey” and continue working on her fitness, weight and a lower-sugar diet.
For anyone who is unsure about joining the programme, Eve says: “There are no downsides to this journey. No negative side effects. We are all in the same boat and I PROMISE you will feel better if you embark on the 1% journey. We can improve our health in small steps in the right direction.”
